Who should get tested?

If you’ve never been tested, now is a good time to check!

Hepatitis C is passed from one person to another through exposure to blood containing the virus.

Regular testing is recommended for people who may come into contact with the hepatitis C virus. If you think you may been exposed, ask for a test at least once a year.

Are some people at higher risk?

Anyone can get hepatitis C, but some people are at higher risk.  This includes:

  • Immigrants and newcomers
  • First Nations, Métis and Inuit
  • People who have used injectable drugs, even once
  • People who have experienced incarceration
  • Gay, bisexual, and men who have sex with other men
  • People born to a person living with hepatitis C
  • People who have unprotected sexual contact with someone living with Hep C
  • People living with HIV

If you've never been tested, you can ask for a one-time hepatitis C test as part of your routine healthcare, regardless of risk factors.
