How treatment works

Hepatitis C is treated with pills called direct-acting antiviral medication, also called DAAs. The pills stop the virus from making copies of itself, allowing your body to clear the infection.

Treatment involves taking pills every day for 8 to 12 weeks. Most people have few or no side effects.

Getting treated can prevent liver damage and reduce the risk of liver disease. It also helps prevent passing hepatitis C to others.

Your individual treatment plan may vary depending on your health.

Treatment has changed

If you were told that your hepatitis C could not be treated, everything has changed. 

Hepatitis C treatment is much simpler and more effective than it was in the past. Older treatments had more serious side effects and did not work for everyone. 

Today’s medications work directly on the virus and cure hepatitis C. They are also more gentle on the body.
